Podcasting and the Rapid City Public Library By John Pappas What is podcasting and why should you subscribe to the Rapid City Public Library’s podcast? First of all, podcasting is a quick and easy way to access stories and events that interest you. Similar to a blog or a news website; a listener will subscribe to a feed and then receive notifications whenever a new podcast is available. It has become a fantastic way for organizations like the Rapid City Public Library to provide interesting and engaging programs to patrons all over Pennington County as well as nationwide. Listeners can access a Lunch & Learn talk or Community Voices lecture that they were unable to attend any time they wish. Individuals that attended the events can also subscribe to catch material that they may have missed or instructions that bear repeating. Podcast downloads are similar to music downloads in that you can access the files on your computer or iPod/MP3 player just as you would any other of your computer files, allowing you to listen to it anytime you want. The Rapid City Public Library has a webpage dedicated only to podcasting. Whether it is April's Community Voices Program on gardening, the Celtic music Lunch and Learn or a past author talk, you can download and listen to many library programs through the library's website. To start listening, go to www.rapidcitylibrary.org and click on the podcasting icon (the little RRS symbol with the earphones) and download any of the podcasts we have available. Currently, the library is featuring a podcast commemorating the birth of Hans Christian Anderson, famed children’s author, with a reading of two of his more famous works – “The Princess and the Pea” and the “Brave Tin Soldier.” Also available is a talk by Richard Ensweiler, president and CEO of the Texas Credit Union League, on a wide array of issues related to personal finance, retirement planning and investing. If you are looking for more local information then listen in to past featured guest presentations with topics ranging from Master Gardener Joe Hillberry discussing how to plan and grow a garden in the unique climate of South Dakota, to our Community Voices “Living Green” panel as they cover conservation and sustainability topics. Speakers included members from the Mayor’s Ad Hoc Task Force for a Green and Sustainable Rapid City, J. Scull Construction, South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, the Breadroot Natural Food Coop, Green architects from FourFront Design and the Black Hills Habitat for Humanity. Podcasting provides the community of Rapid City and beyond an accessible and easy way of keeping informed about local topics and featured events at the Rapid City Public Library as well as allowing the library to continue to inform, entertain and engage our patrons from South Dakota and beyond.
