Fall Book Sale Benefits Community and Library By John Pappas The purpose of the Friends of the Rapid City Public Library is to maintain an association of engaged persons interested in the Library; to focus public attention in a positive manner on library services, facilities, and needs; to help promote the use and enjoyment of the library; and to actively support the Rapid City Public Library in the community. If you attend Discovery Days for kids or enjoy Lunch & Learn and Community Voices programs for adults then you have the Friends of the Library to thank for their ongoing support. The friends also provide support for the Black Hills Knowledge Network, the Summer Reading Program and author events. The plastic bags available at both libraries for patrons to take materials home in and the greener option of canvas library bags that are available for purchase are provided courtesy of the Friends as well. The most visual way that the Friends of the Library achieve their mission is through their Fall Book Sale at the Rapid City Public Library Downtown, held upstairs in Meeting Room B. The sale features used, withdrawn and donated books, CDs and DVDs. Purchases help to support programs and events at the library as well as additions to the convenience and beauty of the Library. This year’s Fall Book Sale will take place over two days: Friday, Oct. 22 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Saturday, Oct. 23 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Both days are a great opportunity to find some bargains or impromptu gifts. With a wide variety of material for people of all ages, you are sure to find something interesting. The Rapid City Public Library Fall Book Sale is a perfect opportunity to stop by the Downtown library and see what the Friends and the library are all about. While at the library you can check out story bags, pick up an events calendar to see what is happening and try the new library system from one of the public computers. For those that cannot make it to the Fall Book Sale, the Friends hold an ongoing book sale all year long in the reading nook next to the Perk It Up coffee shop at the downtown library. The Friends also accept donations year round in the drop-box located in the downtown library lobby. If you are interested in literacy and in your public library you should consider joining the Friends of the Library. Your time, effort and passion will help sponsor library programs for children of all ages and encourage literacy and information access. It will also cultivate learning and personal enrichment for the Pennington County community through lectures and exhibits. |
